POKOTABI / Kikuzushi
喜久寿司
Located in Katsura, Kyoto, Kikuzushi serves everything from thick-cut saba-zushi and deluxe nigiri to seasonal hamo courses, providing an inviting setting for an evening meal.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
When stopping for sushi in the Katsura neighbourhood of Kyoto's Nishikyo Ward, the classic saba-zushi (cured mackerel sushi) is a natural place to start. Kikuzushi offers this Kyoto sushi staple both as a single portion and as a whole roll in the traditional sugata-zushi style, featuring thick, sharply vinegared mackerel that has long earned local favour. The menu also includes deluxe nigiri and assorted platters laden with fresh fish, alongside neatly rolled maki-zushi and tuna rolls (tekka-maki), allowing diners to assemble their meal with clearly listed prices in hand.
Accompanying nigiri or sushi rolls with a clear soup (suimono) or chawanmushi (steamed savoury egg custard) brings added warmth to the spread. In season, a multi-course hamo (pike conger) shabu-shabu set showcases the delicacy from start to finish—opening with an appetiser, followed by fragrant seared sashimi (yakishimozukuri), tempura, the featured hot-pot shabu-shabu, and concluding with rice porridge (zosui) and pickles. It is equally pleasant to graze on small seasonal plates alongside a glass of beer or another drink.
The dining room maintains a calm, quiet atmosphere well suited to solo dinners as well as relaxed family meals. Evening hours run from 18:00 to 22:30 (closed Wednesdays), and booking a table in advance for dinner is recommended. With takeout, delivery, and storefront pick-up options also available, it serves as a dependable choice when looking to enjoy speciality sushi at home.
